MSP Supplementary Benefits: help paying for physio, massage and chiro in BC

If your family's income is under a set amount, BC's Medical Services Plan pays part of each visit for physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and naturopathy. Here's how it works, who qualifies, and how we bill it.

What MSP Supplementary Benefits are

Supplementary Benefits are part of BC's Medical Services Plan (MSP). For people who qualify, MSP pays part of the cost of visits to some practitioners outside a doctor's office.

What's covered

MSP lists these services, from approved providers in BC:

  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic care
  • Massage therapy
  • Naturopathy
  • Physiotherapy (physical therapy)
  • Non-surgical podiatry

MSP pays $23 per visit, up to 10 visits each calendar year. The 10 visits are one total shared across all of those services, not 10 each.

Who qualifies

It depends on your family's adjusted net income: last year's net income, minus deductions for things like age, family size and disability. The BC government says that if it's under $42,000, your family may qualify. You also need to be enrolled in MSP, and to have been a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the 12 months before you apply.

You apply with the BC Application for Health and Drug Coverage, online or by mail. Filing your taxes every year keeps you eligible without applying again. The BC government's page has the details.

What you pay

MSP's $23 is a share of the visit, not the whole cost. Many practitioners have opted out of MSP, which lets them charge more than MSP pays. If they have, they must tell you before your visit, along with what MSP pays and what you'll pay on top.
