How to use your extended health benefits before your plan year ends

Most extended health plans give you a set amount for physio, massage and other care each plan year. Here's how to find out when your plan year ends, what you have left, and how direct billing works at our clinic.

When does your plan year end?

Extended health plans set their limits per plan year. Some plans run on the calendar year, January to December. Others run from the date the policy started, so the year can end in any month.

Your plan booklet says which kind you have, and so does your insurer's app or member website. If your plan comes through work, your HR or benefits contact can tell you.

What to look up in your plan

Plans differ a lot. For clinic care, these are the parts worth checking:

  • Which practitioners are covered. Physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy and counselling are often listed separately.
  • How much each visit gets. Some plans pay a percentage of each visit, others a set dollar amount.
  • The yearly maximum. It can be a total for each type of practitioner, or one total shared between several.
  • Referral rules. Some plans pay for massage therapy or physiotherapy only with a doctor's referral.
  • A health spending account, if your plan has one: what it covers, and whether unused money carries over.

If you're also covered on a spouse's or partner's plan, the two plans may work together, with one paying part of what the other doesn't. Your insurer can tell you how yours fit.

How to see what you have left

  • Log in to your insurer's app or member website and look for your claims history or balances.
  • Call the number on your benefits card.
  • Ask your HR or benefits contact for your plan booklet.

Look for what you've used so far this plan year for each type of care, and what your maximum is.

Questions about your visit or your coverage?

Questions people ask

Do extended health benefits reset in January?

Only if your plan runs on the calendar year. Some plans reset on the date the policy started. Your plan booklet or your insurer's app will say which.

Do unused benefits carry over to next year?

That depends on the plan. Yearly maximums for each type of care start again each plan year. Some health spending accounts let unused money carry over for a time.

Can you bill my insurer directly?

We direct bill many extended-health plans. Our front desk can check yours when you book.
