Do you need a doctor's referral for physio, massage or chiro in BC?
You can book physiotherapy, massage therapy or chiropractic care at our clinic without seeing a doctor first. The catch is insurance: some plans want a referral before they pay. Here's how it works for private plans, ICBC, WorkSafeBC and MSP.

Booking without a referral
You can book physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and active rehab at our clinic directly, without a referral from a doctor.
When your insurance wants one
Some extended-health plans pay for a kind of care only if a doctor referred you, for example massage therapy or physiotherapy. Your plan booklet or your insurer's app will say. If yours needs a referral, get it before your first visit, and check what your plan wants the note to say.
More on checking your plan and how direct billing works.
ICBC: no referral
ICBC says you don't need a referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner, or ICBC's approval, for pre-approved treatment in the first 12 weeks after a crash. You need your claim number and your Personal Health Number. Here's how ICBC treatment works.
WorkSafeBC
For a work injury, WorkSafeBC asks you to tell the physiotherapy clinic that the injury is work-related. At BreakThru, call us to book a WorkSafeBC physio visit. Here are the WorkSafeBC steps.
MSP Supplementary Benefits
If your family qualifies for MSP Supplementary Benefits, MSP pays $23 toward each visit, for up to 10 visits a calendar year across physio, massage, chiro, acupuncture, naturopathy and non-surgical podiatry. Here's who qualifies and how we bill it.
